Carcinogenicity of Triethanolamine in Mice and Its Mutagenicity after Reaction with Sodium Nitrite in Bacteria1
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mice fed a diet containing 0.3 or 0.03% triethanolamine developed malignant tumors. Females showed a high incidence of tumors in lymphoid tissues, while this type was absent in males. Tumors in other tissues were pro duced at a considerable rate in both sexes, but no hepatoma was found. Triethanolamine was not mutagenic to Bacillus subtilis by itself, but it became mutagenic after reacting with sodium nitrite under acidic conditions or when the mixture was heated. Although N-nitrosodiethanolamine, a known carcinogen and mutagen, was detected in the reaction mixture by thin-layer chromatography, it may not be the main mutagenic product, because the product was a stable and direct mutagen and its muta genic activity was destroyed by liver enzymes, unlike Nnitrosodiethanolamine. The lethal and mutagenic DMA damages produced by this unidentified product were sus ceptible to some extent to the repair functions of the bacteria.

متن کاملMutagenicity and Immune Toxicity of Emulsion-type Sausage Cured with Plasma-treated Water
Cold plasma has been developed to reduce microbial contamination and to improve safety of food and medical products. In addition, the technology can be used in the manufacture of sausages without addition of nitrite. To be applied in food industry commercially, the new technology should be safe and efficient. However, toxicological test of plasma-treated food is limited. Therefore, the purpose ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Mutagenic Potentials of Some Food Additives by Ames Test
Some chemicals used by human such as food additives are mutagenic and mutagenicity effects analysis of them is very important because of considerable consumption by man. One of the most common methods used in the recognition of the chemicals' mutagenicity is Salmonella Typhimurium Reverse Mutation (Ames) test. The purpose of the present study is mutagenicity effects analysis of sodium nitrite, ...

Background and Aim: To determin the most sensitive tissues to carcinogenic effect of urethane and co-carcinogenic effect of sodium nitrite by investigation of histopathological variations in different tissues of balb/c mice.Materials and Methods: An experimental study in 40 inbred balb/c mice aged 9-11 weeks was designed. The samples were classified into 4 groups: The first group was mice trea...
متن کاملCOMPACT and molecular structure in toxicity assessment: a prospective evaluation of 30 chemicals currently being tested for rodent carcinogenicity by the NCI/NTP.
A new series of 30 miscellaneous National Toxicology Program chemicals has been evaluated prospectively for carcinogenicity and overt toxicity by COMPACT (Computer Optimised Molecular Parametric Analysis for Chemical Toxicity. CYP1A and CYP2E1). Evaluations were also made by Hazardexpert, and for metal ion redox potentials; and these, together with COMPACT, were compared with results from the A...
